What is HIPAA?
 

HIPAA is the acronym for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996. HIPAA is divided into the following titles:

Title I: Health Care Access, Portability and Accountability

Title II: Preventing Healthcare Fraud and Abuse; Administrative Simplification: Medical Liability Reform

Title III: Tax-Related Health Provisions

Title IV: Application and Enforcement of Group Health Plan Requirements.

Title V: Revenue Offset Provisions

 

Who is the OIG?

 

The OIG is the Office of the Inspector General of the Department of Health and Human Services. The OIG has set guidelines for third party billing services to follow, it is known as "Compliance Program Guidance for Third Party Medical Billing Companies".
